All students should be reading a minimum of 15 minutes each night. It is a great idea to share in dialogue about your child's reading in order to gauge his/her understanding of the text. Having your child read out loud when possible is highly encouraged as it assists in building oral fluency and expression.
Aside from reading, involving your child in everyday tasks (such as creating a shopping list, counting and rolling loose coins, and measuring ingredients for a recipe) is wonderful way to create authentic and hands on learning experiences.
Don't forget about all the great educational websites! They are a fun and motivating way to practice basic skills and reinforce concepts. Some websites have been linked to to my homepage.

Start small. Have your child take responsibility for packing his/her school bag and/or lunch, assign small chores and responsibilities at home, create a checklist of tasks your child is responsible for, the list is endless. It is also really important to note that by grade 3, students should be walking to class on their own and carrying their own backpack to school.
